The SFU Media Lab has a retro style design in this site set up with resources, tutorials, a podcast, as well as a placeholder for what looks like open drop in video labs.

Why is this site inspiring to you?

It has an edgy look fitting for a media lab, plus it makes good use of tags for organizing content. The random animated GIFs in the headers support the artistic aesthetic here, but beyond that, there are great posts about media tools and techniques.

I’m curious to see if/how the drop in lab sessions work. or are set up. This is the work of Jason Toal who did share a little bit of it in the openETC Matter Most as a question:

Hey folks! WordPress integration idea. I’ve been slowly cobbling together a “media lab” site for sfu (thanks openetc https://medialab.opened.ca/ ) and was wondering about approaches to setting up a “drop-in studio” for hands on demos and discussions.

My idea is to take advantage of both a live-stream and a video conference affordances on one branded page.

I came across an interesting approach, and of course it comes with its own WordPress plugin!

My goal is to offer drop in studios at regularly scheduled times where we showcase some tech and our participants can chat. They would be open. but facilitators would have control of participation. The live stream part would be fully open of course, broadcast far and wide. Facilitators could use Zoom “participants tools”, to manage who gets in on the conference part. Best of both worlds!

Who should see this site?

This is of interest to anyone running a instructional technology support area as well as people seeking ideas and tutorials for using media tools.

What ideas/elements from this site might you want to use in your own work?

If it was developed the drop in media lab concept would be of interest especially in lockdown/remote work/teaching mode. Also, very much like the random GIF in the header, and small design touches done with the WordPress Fluida theme.
